To whom it may concern,
I would like to thank you for your interest in the internship program at Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club. Our internship program is an excellent way to prepare for your future in the golf course management industry. Since its inception, Mountaintop has prided itself in being a club that provides an atmosphere where employees grow within their profession. Whether seasonal, full time hourly, or a manager, all Mountaintop employees are placed in a position where they can grow personally and professionally.
Mountaintop was developed by Discovery Land Company. The golf course, designed by Tom Fazio, began construction in the spring of 2004 and opened in July 2006. Mountaintop has quickly acquired a great reputation as a top private club in North Carolina as well as the United States.
The golf course is in Cashiers, NC at an elevation ranging from 3750″-4100′ with average summertime high temperatures of around 80 degrees. The USGA 90/10 greens are equipped with A-4 bentgrass. The tees are 80/20 mix and have L-93 bentgrass, while the L-93 fairways are 9-inch sand capped with 4″ drain lines every 20′. Heavy summertime rainstorms are not uncommon, but with such good drainage, playability is not a problem. The primary rough is Kentucky bluegrass and the secondary rough is a mixture of fine fescues. The course utilizes 2 primary VFD Flowtronex pump stations for 1,400 irrigation heads operated by Toro Smart controllers and Toro Lynx based computer software. The golf course management equipment consists of 80% Deere and 20% Toro. With the abundant resources provided to us, great attention to detail in the management of the golf course is crucial. All golf course staff members take pride in providing members and their guests a well-conditioned golf course each day.

The Mountaintop internship program would provide you with the exposure and implementation in the following core areas:

  • Course orientation and introduction
  • Equipment operation and care
  • Turfgrass management and conditioning
  • Irrigation systems management
  • Maintenance of equipment
  • Managerial skills
  • Course projects
  • Daily course management
  • Tournament preparation
  • Intern self evaluation
  • Superintendents’ evaluation and exit interview.

Each area would be discussed at the beginning of the internship period and a timeline set forth to achieve an advanced understanding in each core area of responsibility. You would be provided a great deal of “face time” with the superintendent and other management staff. Your opinion and thoughts on various golf course management procedures would be desired as you seek to become actively involved in the management of the course.
Thank you again for your interest in the internship program at Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club. Please let us know if you would like to further discuss the position or have additional questions. We feel our internship program has been very successful in providing turfgrass management students a great atmosphere to further their education and work experience. We look forward to talking with you soon.
