Chatham County Shooting Sports club participantsThe Chatham County Shooting Sports 4-H Club competed in the N.C. 4-H Hunter Skills Tournament on Saturday, January 11 at Millstone 4-H Camp in Ellerbe, NC. Nine club members competed in the rigorous tournament consisting of 6 different competitions including 3-D archery, rifle, sporting clay shotgun targets, wildlife identification, hunter skills trail and hunter decision making. This is the club’s first year in existence and the first time competing in this unique tournament.

After a day of both physical and mental challenges, the senior team consisting of Noah Talton, Colton Walters, Sarah Katherine Walters, and Shelby Lynn Walters took 2nd place in the senior division of the state competition, a mere 3 points behind the first-place team. In addition, the junior team consisting of Laura Ann Walters, Carissa Gaines and Jayce Puckett took 2nd place honors in the junior division. Seniors Courtney Pinto and Trie Holloway also made great showings at the tournament. These team members spent many hours since September learning about various types of hunting, hunting safety and ethics, orienteering, animal pelts, and skull identification, and practicing archery, shotgun and rifle skills. Shelby Lynn Walters also received the high overall 1st place medal in the senior division and her sister Laura Ann Walters received the high overall 1st place medal in the junior division. Shelby Lynn Walters and her sister Sarah Katherine Walters have been asked to be part of the North Carolina 4-H National Hunter Skills Team that will compete at the National 4-H tournament in Grand Island, Nebraska in June of this year. The national competition is even more rigorous and the girls are excited to begin training for the trip to Nebraska.
