Young plants in the ground

Young plants in the ground

Transplants have gone into the ground at all of our sites, and this past week we were able to start scouting at each of them. We observed more flea beetles at almost every sites, but just like last week they were mostly sluggish or dying. Again, this suggests that the greenhouse treatments are proving effective against these early season pests. Plants in all fields were treated with imidacloprid for aphid and flea beetle control in the greenhouse prior to transplant. In a typical year, 98% of the conventional tobacco acres grown in state are treated with this material in the greenhouse.

We have three sites located in the eastern part of the state and three sites located centrally in the piedmont region of the state. Grower standard fields are maintained entirely by the grower and all insecticide applications are at the grower’s discretion. In contrast, the IPM fields will only receive insecticide treatments if the observed pest reaches threshold. If you would like more information on a specific pest or the threshold population limits, refer to this post. To see the original project description, check our first report from last season.

Overall, pest pressure remained low this week but as the plants get larger we will begin to see more pest activity.
